Q: Does anyone take Lantus and Apidra? What is the difference between different type of Insulin?
If not what insulin are you on? Are all insulins the same? Like I know there are 24-hour insulin(Lantus) and rapid but like are all the rapid-acting insulins the same?

A: Differences in insulin are usually simply the half-life of the insulin (how long it lasts), the speed of activation (how quickly it first starts working), and how much 'zinc' is within it. Zinc is what they add to insulin to make it last longer. Its why your lantus will last 24 hours, whereas NPH will only last 12-15 hours. Zinc, however, also burns immensely when injected subcutaneously. Thus, each endocrinologist must determine what is the better fit for you. If you have any more questions, let me know, I'll be glad to help.

Q: How many cc's does 40 units of Lantus Solostar equal?
I'm switching from the Lantus Solostar to regular vials. I have syringes, but they are marked in CC's. Should I be taking 40 CC's or someother amount. The doctor is out of touch until next week and the pharmacy won't answer my questions since I didn't get the supplies from them!!!

A: Lantus solostar is 100 units/ml. So 40 units would be 0.4 mls NOT 40 ccs. Assuming that the insulin you will be using is 100 units/ml you would pull up and inject 0.4 ml

Q: What are the tests for a diabetic? My mother-in-law is a type 2 and is on 8 units of scheduled Lantus?
My mother-in-law takes 8 units of Lantus every morning for her type 2. But her sugar readings are all very low, in my opinion. I am a medication aide and I deal with this all day. What are the tests that she will have to endure to be evaluated to see if she truly needs her insulin or not?

A: The best way for her physician to know what her sugar trends are is for her to keep a log of her sugars, and test several times a day. Lantus is a really long-acting insulin, and if she is on pills too, that may be affecting her sugars. Make sure she tests at different times, and logs when she ate in relation to the tests, then bring the log to the doctor. Most newer glucose monitors will do this log for her, as long as she enters meal times.

Q: Does anyone have or has had their diabetic cat on Lantus?
We've had ours on 2 units twice a day,per the vet, and he's been stable these last two months, but there's info out there that cats on Lantus for several months may suddenly go into a honeymoon phase where they stop being diabetic and don't need the insulin anymore. I'm wondering if anyone here has had theirs on Lantus and had this happen? What were the signs (if any) that I'd need to be watching for. I don't home test, and he gets his fructosamine test and glucose test done every few months at the vets. Our vet was the one who told me about the honeymoon that's been showing up much more often on Lantus than with any other insulin. The pharmacist I got the insulin from said the same thing. We haven't got a meter yet, or the strips or lancets for home testing. Right now he's on Purina DM blended with Royal Canin Siamese 38 and a bit of Evo (that's too rich for him). The ONLY food he hasn't had an allergic reaction to was the RC Siamese so he gets mostly that. His wet food is 9-Lives Super Supper, the lowest carb food 9-Lives carries. All his dry foods are 35% protien or higher, plus low carb. We've been on the yahoo groups feline diabetes list for a year, and prior to March my cat had been controlled by diet till he had a bout of pancreatitis which pushed him into definately needing insulin.

A: My previous cat had diabetes and my vet prescribed Humulin for me to inject her with twice a day. I found this pretty easy to do and she took to it pretty well. It's certainly a lot easier than trying to force medicine down their throats. I don't think that cats ever stop becoming diabetic. It's possible that your cat's blood sugar might eventually come to a level where she may not need insulin for a while or will need less of it. But the diabetes never goes away. You should have her blood sugar periodically monitered by your vet and have your vet advise you of any adjustments of the insulin if it is called for.

Q: What should I do if forget my once 24 hours lantus insulin?
I use one time lantus insulin before bed sometimes I forget to inject and go to bed .I dont know what to do in the morning .sometimes I keep myself with novorapid till bed time and then inject lantus .what is your answer? thanks

A: i've done it before and yeah i just made sure i was taking a bit more bolus(short acting) than usual, kept an eye on my sugars and if i needed to top up i would....but everyone is different and its not advisable for this to happen regularly. you could as the other answerer suggested move it to a bit earlier and have those few hours to remember. or else set a reminder. i used to take it any time between 7-11 when i didnt care so much but i found when i started taking it at the same time(or within the half hour) every night my sugars were much much better. good luck!!!

Q: what is the latest insulin discovered apart from lantus aspart lispro and rapida/?
what is the last insulin made by famous insulin makers?are lantus humalog and novolog are the latest or new one is discovred with more effect?

A: I am using Apidra and I was under the impression it is newer. It helps to control me better than either Lantus or Novolog. I have never used Humalog.

Q: Diabetic wanting to do lantus 2 hours early?
I'm going to an event to night and I don't want to take any needles so can I do my lantus 2 hours early?

A: No, you shouldn't it needs to be taken at the same time every day and, plus what if a friend or some one at the event asks if you want to eat after, so you should be prepared anyway

Q: what are the different types of Lantus insulin pens?
apparently the solostar is problematic when it is too cool, the mechanism messes up. does anybody know of any other disposable lantus pens?

A: My wife uses opticlick. It is a pen w/a digital readout. It seems to work for her, although she doesn't refrigerate the pen, just the unused cartridges. We did have a tricky time once getting an empty cartridge out, but that's the only problem I remember.- BTW: it's not disposable, so I guess that's not relevant? Check to see if the actual pen requires refrigeration while in use. GL.

Q: Is unopened Lantus Insulin still good after expired date ?
My son is 16 we have like 4 boxes of expired over 1 year ago lantus is it still good to use please help .Thank you Connie

A: Over 1 year ago? I'm going to go with no. While it probably won't kill him, it is likely to be mostly deactivated...meaning you will not be able to determine it's effectiveness. Best bet is to toss them and get a new bottle. With insulin, it's ALWAYS better safe than sorry.

Q: I am looking for a generic form of Lantus a diabetic medicine?
I have a friend is looking for a less expensive version of Lantus and Apidra he get 5 - 3ml cartridges. He is part of a test group right now and he was wondering if he was going to be able to stay on this medication because of the costs. His doctor told him to see if there are any generic forms

A: Neither Lantus nor Apidra come in generics. He can contact Sonofi-Aventis, the manufacturer, to see if they have an assistance program. He could also ask his doctor for samples.

Q: Is there anything else besides Lantus for Type 1?
I have seen lots of bad side effects about Lantus and was wondering if there were any other medicines used for type 1 diabetes that helps control blood sugars while taking shots?

A: Levemir its a lot better and does not burn as much

Q: What is the difference between lantus and levemire insulin?

A: Lantus usually outlasts levemir. Some people respond better to one or the other. If one's not working well, for you, ask your prescriber about trying the other.

Q: What happens if i mix Humalog and Lantus together?
I have always been told that mixing the two is bad, but i can find anything one what it does to your body. Could some one please help me find this out? Thanks:)

A: generally, if you mix two insulins with different action times, you alter the respective time of each, causing one or both to peak early and might result in a hypoglycemic episode.

Q: How many injections can I get from Lantus if the injection is 45units? There are 10 ml in Lantus vial.?
My co-pay at Kaiser is $46.

A: 1000 units in that vial 21 injections

Q: Can I substitute Levemir insulin for Lantus if I ran out & can't get any for a while?
I take Lantus every morning but didn't pay attention to how many doses I had left & can't get any due to the holiday. My brother uses Levemir & we have a few boxes left.

A: Hello ! Insulin lantus and lememir, have some differences. Lantus is a long acting insulin with once daily dose, while levemir is used as twice daily dose. So transferring from lantus to levemir will require close considerations. You may tell me your age, duration of diabetes, your weight, daily dose of insulin in detail, and then I can suggest you some alternative. It will be helpful if you can tell me which other types of insulin are available in you market. Feel free to ask if you have any further querry. I check my email several times a day, so I will be replying to you in short time your querry is put. Regards, Dr. Zeeshan Chattha. www.mydiabetesclinic.com
